I will be traveling through Nagano station on my way to Yudanaka very soon. My bullet train from Tokyo arrives at 12 pm and then I have to catch a Dentetsu train at 12:13 pm. Being unfamiliar with the layout of the station, is that enough time to catch my connection?

Shouldn%26#39;t be a problem even you need to buy a ticket. It is timed for a normal transfer connection for Japanese.
Nagano station: Shinkansen and DentetsuThere should only be one wicket out of Shinkansen. Turn right (towards the Zenkoji exit, don%26#39;t go left to the East exit (Higashi-guchi).
Keep walking straight all the way until you get out of the train station.
Turn right.
The stairs going DOWN to Nagano Dentetsu (Naga-Den) is way over on the end on the left, past the bus terminal. The Midori-no-Madoguchi is on the corner on your right.
On this map, it says ';Nagano Electric Railway'; for Naga-Den.

13 minutes...............ah, so. Better run. (Yes, running is permitted in the station -- as long as you don%26#39;t run over anyone.)
Do you already have your train tickets? If not, you%26#39;ll need to buy at the ticket booth of Naga-Den. Train no. 7A.
SHOULD you miss the train, there%26#39;s ALWAYS the next train. The next local leaves at 12:26 and will arrive in Shinshu-Nakano at 1:16, transfer to the train leaving Shinshu-Nakano that departs at 1:23, which will get you to Yudanaka at 1:44. Sometimes it%26#39;s fun to watch the locals come and go. :-)
Or take the next express from Nagano at 1:41, arrival at Yudanaka at 2:26. (You could go get lunch in Nagano and browse around the shops.)
Good luck!
Thanks both for the great input and helpful links.
Two more questions:
1) Is the Dentetsu train covered by the JRail pass?
2) I%26#39;m passing through Nagano again on my way from Yudanaka to Matsumoto. From the station map, it looks like the Shinano train (I%26#39;m suppossed to take No. 22) leaves from the main Nagano station. Is that right? Any idea which platform that would be specifically? Is there a Web site which has that level of detail...I%26#39;ve been using jorudan, which only provides times and trains.
Many thanks!
Hi, Gromit,
1) Is the Dentetsu train covered by the JRail pass?
I doubt it. It%26#39;s a private line. I don%26#39;t see it on the JR Railpass website. jreast.co.jp/e/…conventional_line.html
The fare is 1,130 yen from Nagano to Yudanaka. If you take the express, there might be an express fare -- 100 yen extra, I THINK. All are non-reserved seats. The Naga-Den station is small -- in fact, there are only a couple of platforms. If they see you running, they might even hold the train for you! (They used to do that -- can%26#39;t promise they do it now, but it used to be a very local and friendly.)

Yes, Shinano 22 is a conventional JR line, and will be leaving from the main Nagano station. There aren%26#39;t that many platforms (2 to 7 for 3 train lines; my guess is somewhere between 5-7 for Shinano). It shouldn%26#39;t be that hard to find. If you%26#39;re uncertain, all you have to do as ASK someone. Most likely, he or she will TAKE you to the platform.
:-)
