Who is eligible for a JR Pass?

Hi all,

We are travelling in Japan between 4-10 and 4-20. From reading different articles it appears that you have to be in the country for 15 days to qualify for a JR Pass. If this is the case, what would you recommend for travelling the itineray below? The first two days we will be with friends who are stationed in Japan and have their car to use for travel.

(day trip to Yokohama, Mt. Fuji)

Tokyo

Tokyo

(possible day trips to Nara, Kobe, Osaka,Nagoya - not sure if we will hit all of them)

Kyoto

Kyoto

Kyoto

Kyoto

(Enjoy the city and explore, play in Roppongi)

Tokyo

Tokyo

Tokyo

Thoughts? Thank you for your help!

Who is eligible for a JR Pass?

You have misunderstood. The 15 or 90 days (the maximum time you can stay in Japan) refer to the visa requirements, not the JR Pass%26#39;.

You can read up the JR Pass eligibility information here: http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en002.html

If you are covering the Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo round trip within 7 days (including the day trips to Nara, Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya), you are definitely getting the worth of the JR Pass.

A round trip on the Hikari shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto is already costing 26,000+, whereas the pass cost 28300.

Thank you! That is very helpful. I knew I was getting something wrong.

To be more specific only those on Temporary Visitors Permit (eg tourists) can get the JR Pass. Typically the temporary visitor%26#39;s permit is in the form of either 90 days or 15 days. If you are say American, Canadian, British etc etc you usually automatically get a 90 day temporary visitor%26#39;s permit, even if you are staying 9 hours (just an example).

So in specific ';Who is eligible for a JR Pass'; only Temporary Visitors (and Japanese nationals who are living permanently abroad but only visiting Japan).

Once again I like to point out to people that ';Mt. Fuji'; is a generic, when you say ';Mt. Fuji'; you have to be much much more specific as what you want to do at Mt. Fuji (April is outside climbing season), there are many places that Mt. Fuji can be seen from, each with different transportation options to it. eg Hakone, or the Fuji Five Lakes areas, etc all different but good places to see Mt. Fuji.
